- Patients with type 2 diabetes, especially with poorly controlled blood sugar before surgery, have higher readmission risk after bariatric surgery. Getting blood sugar under control before surgery can help reduce complications.
- Hemoglobin A1c measures average blood sugar control over 2-3 months. Higher preoperative A1c was independently associated with increased readmission risk.
- Diabetes is one of the strongest reasons to have bariatric surgery, but optimizing blood sugar before the operation helps ensure the safest outcome.
- Dr. de la Cruz-Muñoz's practice includes structured preoperative optimization addressing blood sugar control and overall medical readiness.
- The study reflects a team-based approach combining bariatric surgeons and endocrinologists.
- This demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement in the surgical experience.
This study published in Obesity examined whether preoperative type 2 diabetes status and hemoglobin A1c independently predict all-cause hospital readmission following metabolic and bariatric surgery. Identifying preoperative risk factors that predict readmission allows surgical teams to implement targeted prevention strategies and optimize perioperative management. Results showed diabetes and elevated preoperative A1c independently predicted higher readmission risk. Dr. de la Cruz-Muñoz is a co-author.
